Prayer of Dedication for Letters

Worship Aids | Photo by Rick ReinhardGod,

Thank you for inviting us to participate in your work of bringing wholeness to all people. Strengthen us as we strive to make our nation’s laws reflect your character of justice and compassion. With these letters, we offer our voices on behalf of hungry people. Use them for your good purpose. Amplify our voices to resound in the ears and hearts of our nation’s decision makers. May your good, pleasing, and perfect will be done. We pray in the name of Jesus, the compassionate and just one. Amen.

Litany for an Offering of Letters

Leader: Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

All: Lord, your name is great!

Leader: For your creation and all that your hands have made, the moon and the stars, the seas and the rivers,

All: We thank you, God.

Leader: You fashioned humankind in your image, according to your likeness, giving them dominion over your creation.

All: We are humbled by this responsibility, O God.

Leader: Yet God, we have sometimes failed to uphold the dignity of every person, stereotyping and exploiting people whom you fashioned in your image along with us.

All: For this we repent.  Lord, forgive us.

Leader: We participate in an economy that fails to reward some people who work hard to provide for their families by not paying them adequately for their labor.

All: For this we ask your mercy.  Lord, forgive us.

Leader: Lord, we know that you are attentive to the cries of the poor and the suffering, who call out day and night for salvation.

All: Thank you, God, for listening to their prayers.

Leader: You call on us to show mercy, justice, and righteousness, and become instruments of your peace.

All: Help us to heed your call, O God.

Leader: Touch our hearts and move us to act, to speak, and to pray.

All: Grant us courage, O God.

Leader: We lift up our nation’s leaders in prayer and ask you to give them wisdom.

All: Give them hearts of compassion and help them to do what they say, O God.

Leader: We know your will is for poverty to cease and hunger to be no more, that poverty and hunger in our nation is defeated,

All: We pray, O God, that no child goes to bed hungry, that parents can adequately provide for their children’s needs.

Leader: Great is your love and faithfulness, O God.

All: May we reflect your love and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

“Jesus Christ’s vision of the coming peaceful reign of God on earth included creating conditions that ensure the well-being of the most vulnerable in creation, including children. Bread for the World’s Offering of Letters sends a clear message that food security for children is not an option, but a priority.”
