The Loaves and Fishes: Jesus Responds to Hunger

Read John 6:1-14 aloud. What is the role of the child in this story? What is the Christian response to hunger?

Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes

Pile everyone’s shoes in the center of the room. Have the children try on someone else’s shoes. Talk about what it means to walk in someone else’s shoes.

Now tell a story about a child who is hungry. Discuss with the children what hunger is like. Ask: How would it feel to walk in this child’s shoes? Have you ever gone without a meal? What was it like? How did you feel? If you were hungry a lot, what might be different in your life?

Art Activity

Choose a poverty fact (found on page 16). Discuss it as a group. Try to find a story that relates to the fact. Have the students illustrate the fact visually with drawings or watercolors.  Encourage them to write a note to their member of Congress about how they want the “fact” to change.  Mail the children’s art and notes along with the letters to your members of Congress.

St. Paul, time and time again, reminds us that one of the hallmarks of the Christian is care for the poor.

In 2010 we will have the opportunity to make a major step in that direction with changes in U.S. tax policy. I’m thankful that Bread for the World’s Offering of Letters is helping us make that change.

— Bishop Denis J. Madden, Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore
