Fact of the Day: The Earned Income Tax Credit effectively helps people get out of poverty. Most Earned Income Tax Credit recipients only receive the credit for one or two years until their incomes increase and they become financially secure.

Fact of the Day: The EITC expansions in last year’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act helped 7 million low-income working individuals and lifted 3 million over the poverty line (which is $21,756 for a family of four).

Taxes and Hunger: Quick Facts

The Earned Income Tax Credit is America’s largest anti-poverty program. In 2009, this tax credit lifted 6.6 million people — including 3.3 million children — above the poverty line (which is $21,756 for a family of four).

In 2007, 25 million working families and individuals received the Earned Income Tax Credit.
