Foreign Aid Basics | 2009 Offering of LettersDid you know? Globally, 1.4 billion people live on less than $1.25 a day.

As a result of rising food prices, the number of hungry people has increased by 115 million. 963 million people worldwide are hungry.

Every day, 26,000 children under the age of 5 die from preventable causes such as undernutrition, diarrhea, unsafe water, or diseases easily prevented by vaccines. That’s 18 children every minute.

Foreign assistance or foreign aid refers to the funding the U.S. provides to other countries for a wide variety of reasons. Sometimes aid is given directly to a country’s government either in cash or “in-kind,” meaning physical items such as tents, food, or weapons. U.S. development aid is predominantly delivered by nongovernmental organizations directly to local communities to address their needs and support their development efforts.
